An Entrepreneurial Mindset & 10 Qualities We Can Learn From

Ever considered starting a business? Do you have an optimistic attitude? Whilst equally different, these two thoughts are alike. They are some of the many qualities that form the idea of the entrepreneurial mindset.

What is an entrepreneurial mindset?

The entrepreneurial mindset is a set of beliefs and skills that allow individuals to thrive in diverse settings. It revolves around overcoming adversities and making the most out of new opportunities.

It’s based on many qualities. Some of which, you probably already have. These qualities govern our thought processes and are reflected in our actions.

Why is an entrepreneurial mindset important?

It’s important because it provides an insight into the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. Famous entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey all have many qualities that fall under this mindset.

But it isn’t just the characteristics that make it valuable. It’s a way of thinking – a growth mindset that allows us to adapt to changes globally. By learning from our problems, we can learn to overcome them.

Building confidence and making us happier in our personal and work-related lives. As the world continues to rapidly evolve, an entrepreneurial mindset equips us with the tools to adapt to these volatile changes. It gives us the capacity to take on new opportunities and embark on new ventures.

And like any new venture comes problems and challenges. But with an entrepreneurial mindset, finding solutions to issues and overcoming them is all part of the process.

By embracing it, we can build resilience and problem-solving skills. Two things that business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs, the youth, and people, in general, need – especially now.

How is an entrepreneurial mindset relevant today?

With the COVID-19 pandemic leading to increased unemployment and many businesses having to close, an entrepreneurial mindset is incredibly relevant today.

Companies have adapted to the changing environment by focusing on the key traits of the mindset. For example, the entrepreneurial quality that focuses on flexibility is widely seen as companies shift their operations online.

Providing greater convenience for consumers, and increasing sales and reputation. As entrepreneurship grows, more entrepreneurs are chasing the long and arduous road to success. Without an entrepreneurial way of thinking, this is difficult to reach.

I think we can all agree that the pandemic has taught us a lesson or two about resilience. In a sense, we have adopted a growth mindset. Learned to be more appreciative of others and an optimist, making the most out of the lockdowns. If we continue to improve our mindset, we can continue to adapt to overcome our obstacles.

We can continue to innovate so that our economy can continue to grow. From positivity to intrinsic motivation, here are 10 entrepreneurial qualities to learn from.

Willing to take a risk

In business terms, this is known as entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is taking a risk to establish and manage a profitable business. It’s one of the key characteristics of an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship builds resilience and allows us to grow in the face of uncertainty.

Take Bill Gates – one of the most successful entrepreneurs alive. He attended Harvard University but knew, like any young adult, that there was more to his dream than getting an education. At the age of 20, Gates decided to drop out of Harvard and start his own company – Microsoft.

This was a risky decision to make as it meant sacrificing his education. However, he had confidence in himself and the company’s potential. His passion for the company encouraged him to take the risk and explore the unchartered waters.

When asked about his biggest regret, Gates replied “it wasn’t ditching college” but rather, “not partying hard enough”. Emphasising how being bold and venturing down the unknown path is always the first step toward success. It’s a quality we should all aspire to have.

Decisiveness

Brian Tracy once said, “Almost any decision is better than no decision at all.” And this is as close to the truth as you can get.

The ability to make decisions firmly and quickly is one of the crucial characteristics of an entrepreneur. For a good reason.

As an entrepreneur, time is limited. Every second counts. Procrastination? Not a chance.

In a company, the ability to be decisive is detrimental to standing out from your competitors. Can you execute plans effectively? Can you meet KPIs? Can you meet goals consistently?

These are all valid questions that investors will consider. But more importantly, as the head of the company, it’s something that you should consider. Being decisive allows you to plan and execute operations effectively.

It builds trust between you and your staff, leading to greater job security. Your ability to think on your feet can impact how confident you are when making decisions. And confidence is a must when leading a team.

Entrepreneurs must deal with countless problems on the go. Being decisive allows them to find creative solutions to these issues quickly and effectively.

Creativity

If it wasn’t for creativity, there would be no Steve Jobs’ iPhone, no Edisons’ lightbulb, no Johannes’ printing press. Nothing. The economy would be so behind, we’d probably be using ancient currency.

Creativity is the ability to transform your ideas and imagination into reality. It means not imposing any restrictions on your concepts and walking into the shallow waters to try something new. To innovate. To see the bigger picture.

Do you know the saying think outside the box? Well, for many entrepreneurs, there is no box.

Creativity is important because it allows you to see ideas and visions beyond a realistic scope. You can view and solve problems more openly by considering different perspectives. For entrepreneurs, creativity is the powerhouse for innovation. It’s what brings a product, a service, or an idea to life.

Think market gaps – decades back, the idea of flying vehicles seemed surreal. Fast forward to 2022, and you have your own ultra-light compact flying vehicle. Needed? Maybe, maybe not.

The point is creativity fuels progress. It makes life interesting and fulfilling.

Positivity

Positivity means thinking in an optimistic way or having a positive attitude. It’s one of the most valuable characteristics of an entrepreneur and improves many aspects of life. Including happiness, motivation, self-esteem, and overall wellbeing.

Entrepreneurs are always making sure that their employees have a positive workplace. They inspire, empower and fuel creativity in staff and work towards building an easy-going atmosphere. This atmosphere builds confidence so more employees are likely to chime in with their opinions. Leading to insightful collaborative discussions and an easy-going atmosphere.

Positivity also makes happier and more productive employees. It helps build relationships with co-workers and enforces positive customer relations. Allowing businesses to connect to their customers on a more personal and authentic level.

Because positivity is part of the personality, it is beneficial to your personal life. Cultivate it and it will cultivate you, rewarding many short and long-term benefits. Such as an improved ability to deal with stress, happier relationships, and greater resilience. Stay positive!

Strong Work Ethic

In the corporate world, a strong work ethic is crucial. It means to complete something to the best of your ability with great dedication.

To aspiring entrepreneurs, a strong work ethic lays the foundation for success. Just look at some of the common patterns among entrepreneurs.

First in, last out. 40-hour weeks? How about 80? Work on weekends? Always.

This idea of working hard and going above and beyond expectations makes entrepreneurs successful. It allows them to be fully committed to their company and scale it to new heights. They find greater satisfaction in their work because they can fully engage in what they do every day.

Take Jeff Bezos – the founder of Amazon and the second richest person alive. His story began simply from his garage. After quitting his job at an investment bank, Bezos decided to open an online marketplace for books.

With a few employees and some funding, he bought books to sell and began developing software for his online site. He would work 84 hours a week and was fully committed to building amazon. Presently, Amazon is worth over $1572 Billion.

And it all stemmed from a strong work ethic and a determined guy. The lesson we can learn is to go after your dream – just make sure to work for it.

Dedication, Determination and Discipline

The three D’s – the formula for a successful mindset. They go hand in hand with a strong work ethic. Entrepreneurs are disciplined. They see the bigger picture and work patiently to reach their goals.

Whilst sticking to rigorous schedules, long hours of work and extra commitments. They limit their distractions, working on one task thoroughly before moving on to the next to avoid multitasking. Which is typically avoided because it divides attention and makes it harder to commit one thing.

Entrepreneurs are determined to achieve their goals even when times get tough. Because through every failure, you learn something new. Encouraging progress and bringing you one step closer to your goals.

More importantly, they are dedicated. They have goals, visions, and desires they want to reach. And do any means necessary to get there.

Passion

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do,” perfectly said by Steve Jobs. Passion is one of the fundamental qualities of success.

It means to pursue an idea with a strong feeling of love or enthusiasm. Whether this is your job, hobby or simply something you’re fond of, passion allows you to excel at it. For entrepreneurs and small businesses, it’s what drives them forward. Towards success.

Take Min-Liang Tan, founder of the gaming hardware company Razer Inc. From a family that believed he should be a doctor or lawyer, he did just that. Heading into law school and graduating as a lawyer.

But, when gaming with his older brother, he found his true passion. He realised that there were many games out there. But not all of them could be played due to the lack of gaming equipment.

So, he quit his job as a lawyer and ventured into the gaming industry. Now his company is worth over $3.2 Billion. This goes to show that passion pays off.

Intrinsic Motivation and Drive

Are you motivated by success? Can you see yourself before you make it? These are all things that fuel intrinsic motivation. The term refers to being self-motivated and not relying on others to give you motivation.

Coupled with drive – a desire to pursue something regardless of the fear of failure, entrepreneurs overcome many problems they face.

They are highly motivated and driven because they’re passionate about what they do. Confident that goals are attainable with a little bit of hard work. Though, it’s demanding to be motivated all year long.

That’s why to entrepreneurs, the experiences they face and the progress their company makes are essential for their motivation. Entrepreneurs stay motivated by being passionate about their work. This is their dream. Along the way, they reward themselves for it.

And failure is acknowledged too. Unfortunately, many see failure as an instant motivation killer. The truth is, it should motivate you to achieve your goals and turn your dreams into reality. After all, each failed attempt is a step closer to where you want to go.

Willing to Fail

“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the aeroplane takes off against the wind, not with it.” Famously said by Henry Ford, the quote delivers a powerful message about the entrepreneurial spirit.

That is, embracing failure. And learning from it. Entrepreneurs willingly choose to go up against challenges because they know it can lead them to achieve greater things.

To be willing to fail means to acknowledge that failure is inevitable. Successful entrepreneurs understand this., although they’ve made the best decision possible, sometimes things don’t always go according to plan.

Fostering an opportunity to learn from mistakes and prevent them from happening in the future. This mentality is what encourages a growth mindset. It builds resilience and allows individuals to overcome obstacles when learning something new or developing a new skill. It also facilitates the creation of good strategies as you can know the actions you shouldn’t take – in hindsight.

A classic example of entrepreneurial strength is Jack Ma. Founder of multinational technology company Alibaba; he endured countless failures and rejections but didn’t let them get to him. Ma failed three university exams and was rejected from thirty job applications and each of his ten applications to Harvard.

Despite all this, Ma was undefeated. He kept pushing through and acknowledged his failures. To this day, he reminds us to “never give up”.

Committed to Lifelong Learning

Entrepreneurs love learning. They are always looking for new ways to identify, tackle and solve problems. By continuously learning, it inspires them to achieve great things. Inspiration rarely comes from doing the same thing over again.

Learning also makes them more creative, humble, and grateful. It builds critical thinking and encourages an open mind to new perceptions and ideas.

When you’re the head of the company, everything falls on you.

New technology? Learn how to use it. New issues? Learn how to deal with them. Running your own company? You oversee all operations.

Therefore, lifelong learning is a must for successful entrepreneurs. By being committed to learning, you can develop various ideas from your knowledge and use them to explore innovative solutions. By acquiring new skills and learning how to use them, you can boost confidence in your capabilities.

Improving your capacity to explore new business ventures and your ability to take on new challenges. Think about it – we’ve been learning ever since we were five years old. From that point onwards, learning is all part of life. Never stop learning.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, our qualities aren’t fixed. They describe us but don’t define us. By adopting an entrepreneurial mindset, we can adapt to any situation and overcome any adversity.

Whilst I can’t guarantee that you’ll become the next Warren Buffet, with a little bit of confidence and some experience, you’ll get the results you’re after.

Thankfully, understanding the entrepreneurial mindset can help you get started. We hope this article was insightful and you enjoyed reading it. Remember your qualities don’t define you. So, don’t let it!
